The most popular window to add holiday decorations to is the window above the kitchen sink.  Adding water to the tea kettle or doing the dishes, the window we look out of might as well be decorated for Christmas too.

Hmm, this appears to be the same house in a previous year decorating scheme. A smaller black and white check is used in the tied back curtains and the loose valance on rings. The red bows on the wreaths are the perfect holiday pop. Which version of this window do you prefer? Small black check or big red buffalo check?

Whoever said red was necessary for holiday decorations? How beautiful is that blue satin ribbon the wreath hangs from? I’m a sucker for the yellow floral Roman shades too. On a practical note, I would not recommend using a real evergreen wreath over window treatments; too much risk of the sap getting on the fabric.

Relaxed Roman Shade- WindowDesignsEtc.com

Decorating Jargon or “Decoratise”?

Have you ever been talking to someone and they are using words that appear to be a foreign language to you? When I’m listening to someone so entrenched in their field of expertise that they are using their own jargon, I’m lost. Although I consider myself pretty worldly, when it’s something new, I like it short and simple.  In terms, I can understand.

You know I LOVE my window treatment and decorating business. I’m afraid that in my decorating excitement I begin to speak “Decoratise” (Yes, I just made that up) and loose some of what I’m trying to convey to my clients.

Window Treatment Wednesday

I’m starting a new weekly blog series to “show and tell” about different types of window treatments. I’ll be posting every Wednesday a new window treatment style with a short description.  You’ll be able to impress your friends and family with your new knowledge of “Decoratise”! Of course, if you see something you would like in our own home, please give me a shout.

Note- I am selected to beta test a new graphics program. A quick tutorial and I was able to create the cool Window Treatment Wednesday graphic.  Do you like it?

Relaxed Roman Shade

A relax Roman shade is a version of a Roman shade that is slightly less rigid so the bottom droops in soft swooping folds. This shade can be operable or stationary.  Most fabrics work best with a stationary or mock relax Roman shade.  If you want the shade to function I recommend a wrinkle-resistant fabric since the folds do need dressing out when the shade goes up and down.  The stationary relaxed Roman shade is a great solution for rooms that are just that, relaxed and casual.  It is used alone as a valance or as a layer with drapery panels. The addition of along the bottom enhances the curve.

You can see more of this room here.

The Beach House Series

Yellow Cape Cod Bedroom

This yellow Cape Cod bedroom is the final room I’ve decorated in the Cape Cod Beach House Series.  This room is like a perfect beach day with sunshine yellow walls and accents of seashells.

Cape cod beach house guest bedroom BEFORE

What’s wrong with this window?

The homeowner added this beach theme lace ready-made valance onto the existing curtain rod.  An existing 1″ metal blind was used for privacy. Sort of cute don’t you think?

There were two problems with the window.

  1. The valance mounts onto the molding making the window look very short and squatty.  You can see through the lace and the blind headrail is sort of ugly.
  2. The metal blinds block out a lot of the view (Check out those classic Cape Cod blue hydrangeas).  If you’ve ever had metal blinds you know they rattle in the wind when the windows are open, now that’s annoying.  The tangled mess of lift cords on the right side are a hazard to young guests and pets.

Custom Valance and New Blinds

Yellow Cape Cod bedroom. New custom valance with one-inch metal blinds and new custom valance with new two-inch Hunter Douglas EverWood® Alternative Wood Blinds with child-safe LiteRise® lifting system. Window Designs Etc.

The top photo shows the valance with the existing one-inch metal mini blinds with cords. Notice how narrow the view-thru is with the 1″ blinds.  On the bottom is the new two-inch Hunter Douglas EverWood® Alternative Wood Blinds with child-safe LiteRise® lifting system. the view-thru is much larger.

Here’s the new custom valance. It’s a variation of a balloon and relaxed Roman shade. It is made of white matelasse with contrasting yellow in the pleats. Notice how the valance extends up to the ceiling. The window looks so much larger and look at that view!

Opened and Closed

The yellow Cape Cod bedroom with blinds opened during the day and closed at night.  When closed, the blinds allow complete privacy.  They block out some light but not 100% so you can awake to the morning sun. You wouldn’t want to miss any opportunity to spend the day on a Cape Cod beach!

The blinds raise up without pull cords.  A light lift of your hand in the center of the bottom rail guides the blind to exactly where you want it. Completely child safe.

As you can see, I LOVE color!

Design and color make me happy.

 Cape Cod Sea Glass Bathroom

Sea Glass Heart from Sensational Color - Kate Smith

Sea shells are abundant on the beaches of  Cape Cod, sea glass not so much.  It’s the thrill of the hunt that keeps me searching for a rare tumbled smooth shard of glass. What I’m really attracted to is the cool shades of greens and blues.

This sea glass heart is from color expert Kate Smith of Sensational Color. I am not alone in my love of sea glass.

Cape Cod Sea Glass Bathroom. Fabric selections for master bath. See more at www.WindowDesignsEtc.com

Continuing with the Cape Cod Beach House Series, this is the fabric for the bath off the Master Bedroom. We use three fabrics in a very simple cotton twill, very beach like.  We used sky blue, sandy beige and glass green for this sea glass bathroom.

Master bath before

The client purchased Blocks by Martha Stewart for the shower curtain and bath accessories. The colors are like sea glass.  We used this as our inspiration. I love how it brings in the blue from the bedroom.

Note- I am an understanding and practical designer.  I get it that not everything can be custom.  It’s great when the client falls in love with something and purchases it.  It is then my mission to enhance it and make it even better.  Designing in collaboration is what it’s all about.

Cape Cod Sea Glass Bathroom. Covered buttons and sea glass. See more at www.WindowDesignsEtc.com

Here’s a detail of the buttons on the color block valance.  I’m an expert at window treatments but not at photography so the true colors don’t show very well here.  The buttons are a sandy beige, the inside of the pleat is a sea glass green.

Cape Cod Sea Glass Bathroom. Blue, yellow and green valance

Here’s the valance in the sea glass bathroom. A simple style adds interest by using three colors in this Cape Cod sea glass bathroom. Underneath is a Hunter Douglas Duette® Architella in a Top Down/Bottom Up style.  It’s motorized too!  A quick tap on the remote lets just the right amount of light in while applying make-up.

Unfortunately, there is not a shot of the whole bathroom so you can see how well the valance colors play off the shower curtain.

What do you love that you can bring into your home decor?

What do you think of this valance? I really want your opinion

Window Treatments For Beach House Master Bedroom

Blue fabrics and shells for master bedroom. window treatments for beach house. See more at www.WindowDesignsEtc.com

Here are the fabrics and large clam shells that will be window treatments for a beach house.

A restful night’s sleep is a “shore” thing in this Cape Cod master bedroom.

The sound of waves along the beach and a lighthouse horn in the distance are the formula for a good night’s sleep while on the Cape.

The client fell in love with the casual comfort of the chambray patchwork of the Ralph Lauren bedding.

Large quahog or clam shells are abundant along the beaches of Cape Cod Bay.  It’s always a good idea to incorporate some of the local items into window treatments for beach house. Yes, shells are a great accent for beach window decor.

Love the details in the window treatment.  The blue toile fabric features seaside and lighthouse scenes.   A tiny yellow and blue plaid forms small pleats along the bottom.  A little bit of yellow peeks out like the sun beginning to rise along the horizon to say “Good Morning”!

Look at the natural details in the shell.  The variations in color show the pure white, ocean blue and the sand. Even the curved growth lines of the shell are like the valance curves. Great design is all about the details.

Master bedroom triple window. Cape Cod master bedroom blue window treatments for beach house. See more at www.WindowDesignsEtc.com

Curves of the valance follow the triple window.  The two centers raise up to the ceiling to add interest and height to a not so high ceiling.

Since this is a bedroom, privacy is necessary.  Existing mini blinds hide under the valance.  The other windows we did have 2″ Hunter Douglas Alternative wood blinds on them, perfect for a beach house.  Maybe new blinds are on the future priority list, not everything can be done at once.

Beach Theme Valance

Ah no, say it isn’t so, Labor Day is fast approaching, signaling the end of summer. The sun is setting earlier and the nights are a bit cooler. Although I love the changing seasons, I’ll dig my toes a little deeper into the sand to hold onto summer as long as I can.

How about if your home was decorated to reflect the relaxing days at the beach so you could enjoy summer all year?  I have been working on this Cape Cod home of a Boston couple for a while now.  Over the next few posts, I’ll unveil one room at a time.  I would love it if you join me.

This triple window had a 1″ mini blind on it when we began the project. The Hunter Douglas EverWood® Alternative Wood Blinds in Cottage White won’t warp, peel or discolor from the salt air and moisture.  An added bonus of the 2″ slats is the wider spacing for a less obstructed view.

The blinds close at night for complete privacy.  Blinds closed during the day protect the furniture from harmful UV rays. They also keep the house cooler by blocking the intense sun.

The back side of the beach theme valance is equally as attractive as the front side.  A stripe of rippled ocean blue and sand beige seersucker peaks out from the backside of the cascade (longer side section) and the inside of the cones that separate the scallops.

All of the materials were selected to sublimely repeat the entire coastal theme of the house – calm and relaxed, like the beach.

During the design process, I used the beach as my drawing board, literally!
