A traditional New England home has classic swags and cascades

Embroidered fabric with vines and green leaves Classic Swags and cascades Holden, MA Window Designs Etc. by Marie Mouradian www.windowdesignsetc.com

Classic swags and cascades are not for those who want to DIY, do-it-yourself. This is truly a custom window treatment best constructed by a professional. Pleats form along the top with lots of fullness that falls into graceful curving swags. The fabric folds and tapers along the sides. This is a cascade or another name for it is, jabot.

The design rendering to show the client exactly what the classic swag and cascade treatment will look like in the fabrics selected.

A classic swag and cascade is a timeless window treatment. The shape of a swag is an odd trapezoid.  Pleats form along the top with lots of fullness that falls into graceful curving swags.

A cascade, or sometimes called a jabot, is along the sides of the treatment. The fabric tapers and folds in vertical pleats. This design will have the cascade mounted underneath the swag.  A custom swag and cascade treatment dresses the window and frames a beautiful view.

Cozy Window Seat – Sterling, MA

Cozy window seat - Sterling, MA Custom window seat framed with swags and cascades, window seat cushion and decorative pillows. Yellow gold, rose pink and green with tassel trim. See more www.windowdesignsetc.com Marie Mouradian

Swags and cascades embellished with tassels and trimmings frame the view of this cozy window seat.

A cozy window seat comes into focus in a Sterling, MA home library.  The addition of a thick bench cushion and lots of custom pillows add to the comfort.  Custom swags and cascades frame the view on this window seat. Window “coverings” do much more than cover the window.  The focus becomes the view out the window.

A harmonious mix of patterns is a sign of good interior design.  How many fabric patterns do you see here?  Six various trim styles embellish four different fabrics.  Each one is strategically selected to coordinate and flow with the others.  The use of trimming is the perfect finishing detail.

What frames your view this sunny spring morning?

Happy Sunday

Worcester garden room with brown silk relaxed Roman shades and Hunter Douglas Silhouette

Worcester Garden Room

The anti-room off a formal living room was designed as a garden room with three walls of windows and a tile floor.  The Worcester Massachusetts homeowner wanted a warmer feel for quiet conversation and reading.

The window treatments are mock relax Roman shades.  The bottom swoop makes them more relaxed than straight fold Romans.  The shades are stationary so they are more like valances.  The fabric is a rich chocolate-brown dupioni silk.

A Hunter Douglas Silhouette window shading protects the furnishings from harmful UV rays while still letting in the light.

The room gets its pop of color from the love seat that is reupholstered in the warm fiery shade of Tangerine Tango.  Decorative throw pillows with down filling of the window treatment fabric have black brush fringe to pull the room together.

Tangerine Tango Interiors

Tangerine Tango Pantone 2012 color of the year

Pantone’s Tangerine Tango

Tangerine Tango is IT.

“Sophisticated but at the same time dramatic and seductive, Tangerine Tango is an orange with a lot of depth to it,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. “Reminiscent of the radiant shadings of a sunset, Tangerine Tango marries the vivaciousness and adrenaline rush of red with the friendliness and warmth of yellow, to form a high-visibility, magnetic hue that emanates heat and energy.”

On the work table-Dust board covered in matching fabric.

A custom tangerine tango asymmetric valance is ready for installation in a Shrewsbury, MA home. Unless using decorative hardware, most custom window treatments mount onto a dust board that attaches to the wall.  I believe every aspect of a window treatment should be custom so I cover the board with matching fabric.

Yes, I am that particular about the details and hey, you never know who might be peeking behind your gorgeous new window treatments!

In order for this style to stretch the entire width of the window, requires a seam.  A false placket and buttons hide the seam and become a design detail.  Notice how the pattern matches up perfectly.

The print fabric is a linen and rayon blend from RM Coco, one of my preferred vendors. I have their complete library in my studio.

Valances hang in my studio with special under mount clamps.  I can inspect them before installation to be sure everything is just right.  Note-I have placed the treatments in the opposite position they will be installed, the longer cascades will be towards the ends, not the middle.

If these custom treatments look this good in my studio, can you just imagine how stunning they will look hanging in your home?  Maybe I’ll reveal that in tomorrow’s post!

This is what the Pantone 2012 Color experts say.

“The 2011 color of the year, PANTONE 18-2120 Honeysuckle, (my ever favorite pink) encouraged us to face everyday troubles with verve and vigor. PANTONE 17-1463 Tangerine Tango, a spirited reddish orange, continues to provide the energy boost we need to recharge and move forward.”

Family Room Comfort

A professionally designed family room comfort. Red, green and navy blue

Family room comfort is the goal for this Rye, New Hampshire vacation home. A professionally designed room that incorporates many patterns blending together. The window treatments are a simple design that is made unique by the creative combination of fabrics. Pillows repeat the fabrics from the window treatments. Each of the accessories have special meaning to the homeowner.

The family room BEFORE. this does NOT have family room comfort

How Do You Decorate A House On Cape Cod?

With beach things, of course!  Think light turquoise ocean, sandy beige beaches, blue hydrangeas, bleached seashells, warm yellow sunshine and cool sea-glass.  I didn’t have to look far when designing for this couples relaxing retreat from city living.  They requested the house to be comfortable, fun, calming, simple and stylish for themselves and their constant flow of guests.

The beach house guest room

Guest Room Before

This pint-sized guest room, painted “Raindrop”, has plenty of space for weekend guests to drop their bags and head to the beach. The quilt has squares of all the beach colors.

One window for an ocean breeze with a vinyl roller shade for privacy was simple enough for function but certainly has no style.

Elements of a seashell window treatment

Shells in bowl

This bowl of shells the homeowners collected from the beach caught my attention. Initially, I did a double take since I thought they were a bowl of Cape Cod potato chips!

Guest Room Design

A soft blue and green stripe fabric from RM Coco is ideal. The design is a flat valance with layers. The treatment would be customized for the house by adding the shells along the bottom. A unique personal touch would incorporate a piece of coral found on a recent trip to Italy. A Hunter Douglas EverWood® Alternative Wood blind for privacy and light control.

Materials for Guest Room

Stripe fabric from RM Coco and a contrasting blue for an accent detail are ready for a unique window treatment.

The shells are paper-thin, almost transparent. There is a tiny hole in each of them, just big enough to fit a needle through.  Note-I did blog about these when they arrived in my workroom in February but I saved the completed creation for beach season.

The Seashell Window Treatment

Layered valance with seashells

The Seashell Valance

Dangling shell detail

Skilled seamstresses attached the shells along the bottom of the window treatment with very fine fishing line, aka invisible thread.

Coral detail

The Cape Cod seashells dangle off the bottom of the valance. The Italian coral takes its place in the center.

Dresser

The homeowner refinished his childhood dresser. White porcelain seashell knobs made it the perfect addition to the guest room.

Dresser knobs

Seashell details are throughout the room.

The guest room is complete

Complete and ready for guests.

Combining shells and coral found on the beach make this window treatment a creative expression of the homeowner. It reflects how they want their guests to feel.
