Last week I traveled to Atlanta, GA to attend Design Bloggers Conference 2015. Last year was my first time to attend and loved it, I couldn’t wait to return.

I was inspired and energized being with my design and blogging friends.  Little did I know how much more fun and excitement was in store for my second conference.

Day One of Design Bloggers Conference 2015

It’s a relatively small and focused group of attendees so it is held in the Grand Ballroom of the Grand Hyatt in Buckhead, Atlanta, GA.

The window treatments heading down the staircase are quite impressive, don’t you think?  “Simple” panels with grommets thread onto rods.  The bottoms are tapered and then flipped back and fastened like a tent.

I received my official name badge with the full schedule on the back.  There is tremendous support from vendors which makes the swag bag (think goodie bag for adults)full of lots of fun things like Cree LED lightbulbs, Taylor Burke Home Goo Goo clusters, a tape measure from Chairish, notepads, portable electronic chargers, pencils, mints, chapstick and the list could go on!

When I left Central Massachusetts with 100+ inches of snow and headed south, I was anticipating warmer temps.  Warmer they were, but only just above freezing and rain/snow was in the forecast. This is a bad formula for Georgia since they are not equipped to clear the roads.  The governor declared a state of emergency and all were to be off the road!  We were supposed to be at ADAC, Atlanta Decorative Arts Center, for morning talks and then to Phipps Plaza for the Luxury Living Show where Alexa Hampton was scheduled to speak.  She couldn’t fly in so she spoke via Skype.

The ADAC morning was cut short but we did enjoy a lovely lunch hosted by Duralee before we left.  They had more swag bags for us.  Look how pretty these are.

Anyone care to guess which color I choose?

Leave your answer in the comments at the bottom.

The 450+ attendees are tweeting like crazy the whole conference.  The hashtag is #DBCatl.

While at the luncheon, I saw a tweet come in from Rhoda Vickers of Southern Hospitality, a blog I have been following for 6+ years.

Of course I had to find Rhoda and have my picture taken with her.  What a Southern sweetie!

Bjork Studio after party

We spent the afternoon waiting and watching for the big Atlanta snow….and drinking wine in the lobby with all of the other design bloggers.  This is really why this conference is so valuable, it’s the willingness of others to share, inspire and teach.

The snow never arrived so we were on for a nice welcome reception sponsored by my preferred paint, Benjamin Moore.

For the after party we were off to Bjork Studio where they make custom upholstered furniture.  Traditional Home and Sunbrella were the sponsors. Bjork Studio made these lighted boxes to feature the furniture in a wall of wood scraps. What a fun way to display!

These pillows caught my eye with their varied patterns and bright colors.  Performance fabrics, particularly Sunbrella brand, are not just for the outdoors any more.

They are colorful, trendy, soft and very durable for the family room too.

Day Two of Design Bloggers Conference 2015

Nate Berkus started off the morning as the keynote speaker.  What a cutie!

You may know him from Oprah, his own show, American Dream Builders or his product line at Target.

How does a famous successful designer inspire a room full of designers?

With PERMISSION!

Nate gave us permission to be honest about what we want and need.

Permission to make mistakes.

He said “Give yourself permission to take that design risk”.

Permission to believe you are inspiring.

Nate Berkus is a hard act to follow.  Marcus Sheridan, @TheSalesLion, easily captured our attention with his energetic and powerful talk on how to dominate your niche online.

His advice on “Answering customers questions” was exactly what I needed to hear.  This blog is for YOU, my sweet readers.

What have you always wondered about window treatments, interior design, color, the business of design or me?

What questions would you like answered? If you have them, I’m sure others do too.

Please leave a comment below or email me.

Break Time

We had a short break in between speakers to freshen up, grab another cup of coffee and visit with some of the sponsors and exhibitors.

I was happy to see my favorite fabric vendor with a beautiful display of the newest line from Nate Berkus, (yes he does fabric too), Vern Yip and Isabell de Borchgrave. Rebecca and Jen are brand and marketing managers for Fabricut, Trend Fabrics, S. Harris,  Stroheim and Vervain.  I dropped my business card in the bowl for a chance to win dinner with Vern Yip.

See more posts about Fabricut here.

YouTube and all videos are an easy way to digest information.  I frequently hop over to YouTube and search for something I want to know more about.

Beth LeManch of Entertaining With Beth, produces gorgeous videos on the ease of entertaining beautifully.  Check out her channel here.

FYI – Beth’s dad is Joe Ruggiero.  He is a designer with his own furniture and fabric line.  I think of Joe as the pioneer of design TV, even before HGTV.

Day one afternoon

The founder and producer of Design Bloggers Conference 2015 is Adam Japko of Esteem Media.  Esteem Media is based right here in Carlisle, MA.  One of it’s many print brands is New England Home.

Adam isn’t shy about his love of wine.  Here’s an in depth interview with 90+ Cellars.

Jonathon Alsop of Boston Wine School spoke to us about branding and social media.

Wine and design are the perfect pairing.  What a treat to taste a Pinot Noir and a Cabernet even before lunch with my longtime design friends.

Having fun at the conference with Jackie Von Tobel –  author, product designer and the licensee of Catalina Floral Dinnerwear at Pier One and Cheryl Draa – Cheryl Draa Interior Designs and our personal Atlanta ambassador.

I featured one of Jackie Von Tobel’s pillows in this post.

The smile on my face may be because of the sip of wine or the fact that I was just notified I was one of the winners of dinner with Vern Yip!!!!!!

The big surprise was the dinner was at Vern Yip’s HOUSE!

He tweeted out “Dinner for 22 uber talented design bloggers at my house for “DBCatl 2015 to launch my Fabricut Vern Yip for Trend fabric line”

What a treat and over the top dream come true.  Here’s a pic of Vern and I in his gorgeous dining room decorated with his own line of fabrics.

Watch for another post I’ll do just about the dinner, his family and their lovely home.

Day Three of Design Bloggers Conference 2015

Paint giant Benjamin Moore had these exquisite floral arrangements done in the trending colors of 2015.

Their color of the year is Guilford Green, a silvery green that works with just about everything.  I’ve always considered green to be a neutral as it is the color in nature that binds everything together.

The flowers highlight Carter Plum and Old Claret.  All shades of rose petal, wineberry and the deepest plum are trending.

The rose and hydrangea represent Benjamin Moore colors Chantilly Lace and Pink Damask.

Color is important. Pantone’s 2015 Color of the Year – Marsala – is currently the most popular post on this blog.

Bunny Williams Speaks

Bunny Williams, the grand dame of design who studied under Sister Parish and Albert Hadley, gave us excellent golden nuggets of wisdom.

She believes homeowners should go out and hunt for things that give a room a personality.

Use various finishes and textures. “Maybe it shouldn’t all go together, it will contrast and maybe be a little more interesting”

In the photo below she is telling how a client found a limited amount of this fabric she fell in love with.  Everything in the room compliments the valance design.

That’s a window and a room with great personality and a great story.

Brian Patrick Flynn

Brian Patrick Flynn started in television production then turned to design.  He is a contributor producer and interior designer for HGTV.

Here he is sitting in front of a slide of one of the rooms he has curated.  He one-mane man energy high.  He talks, moves around, designs and produces projects so fast there’s no wonder how he has accomplished so much. One attendee referred to him as “Design on steroids”.

One of his projects is the 2015 HGTV Dream home on Martha’s Vineyard. Watch him give a tour of the home here.

He’s aware that people want to live in homes, not sets.

“Don’t forget the finishing touches that say, “Somebody lives here”

The stage was set up like a comfortable living room where conversation could just flow.

The furniture is by Currey & Company.  I love the mix of patterns – toile, diamond and a printed bargello – in charcoal gray, cream and touches of yellow.

I returned home with so much energy, inspiration and enthusiasm. It was sad to leave my design friends both old and new.

Thank you Adam Japko and Design Bloggers Conference 2015. It was so much fun!

I can’t wait for next year!

Red – The color of love

Red is the color we pay the most attention to. It’s the most energetic color, it’s hot and dramatic.

Red is the color of love, passion, and desire; red hearts, red roses.

A “red-letter day” is terrific; wearing a “scarlet letter” marks you as untouchable.

On the flip side, red is for danger, speed, and anger.  It increases the heart rate and stimulates the appetite.

In-person interior design consulting, especially for color, will never be replaced by the internet.  True color is one of the most difficult to convey on the computer screen since monitors have differing color settings.

Keeping this in mind, Marsala sometimes appears rust, red or brown.  Holding a color sample in your hand is best so pick up one of the paint samples or order a swatch directly from Pantone.

Is it just me or are we having a peony explosion? Gorgeous photos of peonies show up on social media and in my blog feed daily.

These are some of my faves for you to check out – The Pink Pagoda,  A Design Snack and Fresh American

Ranging in color from pure white to deep magenta, each variety is a natural study in color.

Aside from taking a photo, how can we add this beauty to our homes to enjoy the entire year? With fabric, of course!

Deep Magenta Peony

Magenta peony with fabric. Fabricut stripe fabric pattern Radko Color Heatherberry. Please visit WindowDesignsEtc.com for more information.

Starting out as this tightly closed bud, this peony will burst into a full blossom of rich magenta.  I’ve always considered green as a neutral and the addition of the lime stripe is no exception, it enhances the magenta.  About green, have you ever seen the leaves that did not compliment the color of the flower? Nature got it right!

This Fabricut stripe made into a tablecloth would be the perfect setting for a bouquet of peonies.

My social media followers may recognize this fabric from a post I did earlier.  While researching a project, I realized my recent manicure of OPI Dim Sum Plum was the same magenta color!  You can see it on Facebook and Instagram. Come follow me.

So there are two of my favorite obsessions…..fabric and flowers.

Fall’s Favorite Food

Fall has displayed some of the most spectacular color in years.  The change in temperatures brings about cravings for the season’s favorite foods.

When our daughter came home from college with a request for butternut squash soup with apples,  I happily oblige.

I posted some pictures over on Facebook and got lots of requests for the recipe. This yummy taste of Fall is super easy to make.

Fabric and Food- French Donut Muffins on Fabricut embroidered linen www.WindowDesignsEtc.com Marie Mouradian

French Doughnut Muffins on Fabricut Hybris-Lemondrop Embroidered Linen From India

French donut muffins have become a family favorite.

Food is essential to our lives.  Cooking with high-quality ingredients and presenting it well turns ordinary food into a feast.

I was inspired to make these French Doughnut Muffins after our morning visits to Underground Bakery in Dennis Village, Cape Cod.  The owner, Ian, and his team offer these most decadent creations that melt in your mouth.  Once they bake, they coat their muffin in butter and encase the entire thing in cinnamon sugar. Yummy!

Now, I couldn’t possibly duplicate Underground Bakery’s confections so this is my less-guilt variation.

French Donut Muffins

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup white flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk ( I was out of skim milk)
  • 1/2 cup coconut oil (liquid form- just put the jar in warm water if it’s solid)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Topping

  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup melted butter

Preheat oven to 350 degrees

Grease 18 muffin cups. (This will vary depending how big you make them)

Lightly stir together the flours, sugars, baking powder, salt and nutmeg in a medium bowl.

In a separate bowl whisk together the eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla.

Add the dry ingredients to the liquid, mixing just until moistened.

Fill the muffin tins 3/4 full.

Bake for 20-25 minutes or until an inserted toothpick comes out clean.

While the muffins are baking, combine the sugar and the cinnamon. Melt the butter.

As soon as the muffins come out of the oven, brush the tops with the melted butter and dip in the cinnamon sugar mixture.

Serve warm with coffee, milk or hot cider.

This is the perfect recipe for fall because it makes the house smell oh so yummy.

Bon Appetite!

This color psychology article was originally written for my email newsletter ~Beautiful Home and Life Design~ to educate my clients on why the colors we choose to decorate with have an emotional effect on how we feel in the room.

Color has the power to change our mood

What is color psychology? Color energizes, it calms, it soothes, it provokes, it stabilizes, it softens, and it creates chaos.  Playing with color is playing with your emotions.  We use color to lift our spirits, to inspire us and to make our homes feel safe and warm.  The culture we live in and our personal history define color associations.

Color Psychology – The emotions different colors evoke

Red, Pink, Orange, and Yellow – The Warm Colors

Red is the color we pay the most attention to. It is the most energetic color, it’s hot and dramatic.  Red is the color of love, passion, and desire; red hearts, red roses.  A “red-letter day” is terrific; wearing a “scarlet letter” marks you as untouchable.  On the flip side, red is for danger, speed, and anger; think of stop signs.  It increases the heart rate; you won’t find it in the emergency room.  It stimulates the appetite; you will find it in most food establishments.  Have you ever gone into a pizza place or Chinese restaurant that wasn’t red?

Pink is soft, sweet and secure.  Hot pink is playful and assertive.

Orange has become a lot more acceptable in the past few years.  Bright orange is loud and flamboyant.  Orange is the color of affordability; think Home Depot and ING, it appeals to the masses.  Warm terracotta, apricots, and peach tones are more sophisticated.  Fall leaves, pumpkins, and Halloween come to mind when you think of orange.

Yellow is warm and friendly.  It inspires.  Energy, joy, happiness and hope are associated with yellow.  Yellow creates a glow even in the darkest rooms.  Like the sunshine, yellow is warming but too much of it can be burning.  Bright yellow causes tension and stress.

Cool Colors – Green, Blue, and Purple

Green is the color often cited as a favorite.  It represents nature, health, money and prosperity.  Green is cool, calm and healing; think of a spa.  Hospital scrubs are usually green.  A negative effect is jealousy; being “green with envy”.  It’s good to be “seeing green” (money); and bad to be “turning green” (sick).

Blue is tranquil, calm, stable and secure.  Blue is the color most used in business to show reliability, integrity, and trust.  Navy blue demands respect.  Blue slows the pulse, lowers the body temperature and reduces the appetite.  A great color for a weight loss clinic.

Purple represents royalty, dignity, and spirituality.  Purple is an exotic color.  There is a fine line between a spiritual ceremony and magical mystery.  Purple is imaginative and creative.

Brown, Black, Gray, and White Color Psychology

Brown is down to earth, warm and secure.  Lighter shades of beige and taupe are classic neutrals.  Deep browns add richness and depth.  Browns are generally appealing to everyone.

Black is another mysterious color.  In the spectrum, it is the absence of light, therefore, no color.  Formal, elegant, sophisticated and sexy black is in contrast to the black of death, mourning, and witchcraft.  Black is a great accent color.

Gray is the most neutral.  Gray has quiet strength and longevity; think granite and metal.  Gray is timeless.  It is best as an accent.

White is what we see when all the colors come together in perfect balance.  White is pure, simple and clean.  Reverence, peace, and joy are evident in white Easter lilies.  Every color goes with white.  Too much white can be uncomfortable and hard on the eyes.

My daughter’s Marketing class at Bryant University discussed the psychology of color today.

Now that you know the emotions behind the colors, can you think of any instances where color played a part in your buying decision?

Have you ever walked into a room and felt uneasy because of the color?

What colors surround you?

What color would you never be able to live with? Why?

Chicago Architecture

Chicago Architecture

I enjoyed the various architecture of Chicago.  Each building had its own unique personality, like the windows I treat.

I loved the undulating curves of the balconies on the building outside my hotel room. This curved building is a high contrast to all the harshly straight and linear buildings surrounding it. I imagine the bottom of a valance with similar curves softening a room.  See there is window treatment inspiration everywhere!

Navy Pier Chicago

A little whimsy and fun should be added to everything. Navy Pier is Chicago’s version.  Lake Michigan seems endless but it is no Atlantic Ocean.  For this New Englander, the giant Ferris wheel reminded me of Nantasket Beach and the towers seem to be taken from the salt and pepper bridge aka Longfellow Bridge over the Charles River.
