Cozy Window Seat – Sterling, MA

Cozy window seat - Sterling, MA Custom window seat framed with swags and cascades, window seat cushion and decorative pillows. Yellow gold, rose pink and green with tassel trim. See more www.windowdesignsetc.com Marie Mouradian

Swags and cascades embellished with tassels and trimmings frame the view of this cozy window seat.

A cozy window seat comes into focus in a Sterling, MA home library.  The addition of a thick bench cushion and lots of custom pillows add to the comfort.  Custom swags and cascades frame the view on this window seat. Window “coverings” do much more than cover the window.  The focus becomes the view out the window.

A harmonious mix of patterns is a sign of good interior design.  How many fabric patterns do you see here?  Six various trim styles embellish four different fabrics.  Each one is strategically selected to coordinate and flow with the others.  The use of trimming is the perfect finishing detail.

What frames your view this sunny spring morning?

Happy Sunday

Freshen Up Your Home For Spring

It’s time to freshen, brighten and update all the rooms in your house.  Follow these Spring home decorating tips for a few quick changes this weekend. They will improve the outlook of your entire family. Changing up your decor is a great way to wipe away those winter blues.

Spring Home Decorating Tips

1. Clear away the clutter.  Are there things on your coffee table, kitchen counter or nightstand that have piled up since the first of the year?  Go thru the stacks.  Purge what you don’t need.  Put away the winter-themed items. Create a folder for the items that require action. While you are clearing, now is the time to pack away any leftover holiday decorations.  Please take the Christmas wreath off your front door and put those long-lasting poinsettia near a sunny window in the basement.

2.Freshen up your reading materials.  Break out the gardening books and magazines.  Even if you don’t get excited at the thought of digging in the dirt; you can still be inspired by the beautiful photography.

Spring home decorating tips - English Cottage Gardening For American Gardeners. Gardening books Window Designs Etc. by Marie Mouradian www.windowdesignsetc.com

Amazon has a gardening book for every style.

3.Front door decor.  Add a pretty spring wreath to your front door.  A basket of silk tulips, daffodils or hyacinths says Spring.  Choose materials that are a high contrast from your door color.  Add a pretty bow that will blow in the breeze. Nothing adds a welcoming touch to your home as an inviting entrance does.

So there you have a few things to get you going on refreshing your decor for Spring.  If you find it confusing whether something is a decorating do or a decorating don’t, email me a photo.

I am always happy to help make your house into a home you love to live in.

You deserve it!

Worcester garden room with brown silk relaxed Roman shades and Hunter Douglas Silhouette

Worcester Garden Room

The anti-room off a formal living room was designed as a garden room with three walls of windows and a tile floor.  The Worcester Massachusetts homeowner wanted a warmer feel for quiet conversation and reading.

The window treatments are mock relax Roman shades.  The bottom swoop makes them more relaxed than straight fold Romans.  The shades are stationary so they are more like valances.  The fabric is a rich chocolate-brown dupioni silk.

A Hunter Douglas Silhouette window shading protects the furnishings from harmful UV rays while still letting in the light.

The room gets its pop of color from the love seat that is reupholstered in the warm fiery shade of Tangerine Tango.  Decorative throw pillows with down filling of the window treatment fabric have black brush fringe to pull the room together.

Tangerine Tango Interiors

Tangerine Tango Pantone 2012 color of the year

Pantone’s Tangerine Tango

Tangerine Tango is IT.

“Sophisticated but at the same time dramatic and seductive, Tangerine Tango is an orange with a lot of depth to it,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. “Reminiscent of the radiant shadings of a sunset, Tangerine Tango marries the vivaciousness and adrenaline rush of red with the friendliness and warmth of yellow, to form a high-visibility, magnetic hue that emanates heat and energy.”

The addition of a Tangerine border transforms this custom valance from a neutral brown and beige to WOW! The contrasting banding not only adds a great punch of color, it also highlights the shape of the triangles.

Tangerine walls add warmth and whimsy to this dining room. Heirloom furniture and an art deco light fixture add personality to a room. The custom window treatments are made of a multi color fabric that includes Tangerine Tango. The bottom edge features a contrasting band of teal. The sheer Roman shades diffuse the light and offer a little privacy.

Family Room Comfort

A professionally designed family room comfort. Red, green and navy blue

Family room comfort is the goal for this Rye, New Hampshire vacation home. A professionally designed room that incorporates many patterns blending together. The window treatments are a simple design that is made unique by the creative combination of fabrics. Pillows repeat the fabrics from the window treatments. Each of the accessories have special meaning to the homeowner.

The family room BEFORE. this does NOT have family room comfort

A major remodel of the home was well underway for my first decorating consultation with the architect. There was only a vision of what this room would look like completely decorated.

Comfortable seating in family room comfort

This room is about making everyone feel comfortable. The colors are rich and vibrant. The design is simple. There are lots of pillows for comfort and a chenille throw to snuggle with.

The homeowners accessories highlight the colors in the window treatments and pillows.

Interior Design Accessories

Interior Design Accessories, fitz and floyd interieurs plates, design books, finial, tassel black and gold.

The details in these interior design accessories are a reflection of my passion. I LOVE window treatments!

I collect some of my favorite things I use in design to create a vignette for my own home.  The Interieurs by Fitz & Floyd salad plates feature different window treatment designs.

I love to get my hands on design books, especially window treatment books.  Stacking books is a great way to elevate items on display.

The large cone finial is from a past project.  It fits at the end of a 3″ diameter rod. It becomes an interesting art object when added with other like theme items.

Use interior design accessories that evoke meaning and bring connection to others.  The black and gold check “pillow” is filled with wonderful herbs.  A friend gave it to me as a gift after we toured a Boston Junior League Showhouse.  The sweet scent reminds me of her and the fun we had that day.

The large tassel adds softness and texture to all of the other hard surfaces.  Let’s face it, tassels are fun!

Happy Birthday, America!

One aspect of the Etc. is custom bedding

A quick post on a Friday evening before I leave the studio.

I recently purchased new software that will help people envision their custom bedding options.  There are hundreds, yes hundreds, of choices to cover your bed.

Pillow options for custom bedding. Bolster or neck roll, Flanged Euro Shams, Wide Euro Sham

I spent the afternoon playing working on these pillow options for an 8-year old boy’s room in Holden, MA.  The tailored coverlet will have cording along the top edges so it will be fool-proof when he makes his own bed.  I’m giving him 3 pillow options, a bolster, 2 European shams or 1 wide European sham.

Which option would you choose?

RM Coco Fabric for a Holden, MA custom bedding project

This beautifully textured woven stripe from RM Coco is the fabric we selected for the bedding.
