Earlier this week, I attended the Homesense designer preview of the much-anticipated home furnishings store in Framingham, Massachusetts.

You’re Invited

TO AN EXCLUSIVE PREVIEW OF HOMESENSE

Mix, mingle, sip & savor with fellow home decor professionals, bloggers &

influencers while you explore a new home store designed to inspire.

Lots of staff, management, and executives of TJX greeted me throughout the entire store.  I caught up with a few design and blogging friends. That was the mix and mingle part.  I skipped the sip and savor.  Who had time?  You want a sneak peek, right?  I took tons of photos for you.

Homesense Designer Preview

Lighting at Homesense Designer Preview Framingham Massachusetts See blog post at windowdesignsetc.com

The huge, and I mean massively huge, lighting selection is at the front right of the store. Well, that’s where it begins.  There are so many drop-dead super fantabulous chandeliers, pendants and hanging fixtures that they extend almost all the way to the back of the store!

The lamps, many of them in pairs, are by style. Modern, traditional, golds, blue and white, lucite, ceramic, marble…a lamp for every style. There is a large array of wall sconces too.

Every light fixture is set up and most are on.  Not a single fixture is still in its box.  Each of the hanging fixtures can be lowered to see the details. Can you say my favorite word “motorization”? One of the Homesense gals enthusiastically told me about how they assembled each piece themselves. Now that’s product knowledge!

Furniture Vignette Homesense Designer Preview Framingham Massachusetts See blog post at windowdesignsetc.com

There are curated vignettes throughout the store.  The pieces themselves are beautiful but now they show you how to put them all together. Hmm, exactly how a designer would.

Seriously, I’m ready to just purchase this for my new studio space.  The curved white leather love seat, those pink floral chairs, the modern glass coffee table with an artfully curved lucite base and the PINK books on the table are all items I would put together for a client.

The Curated Corner

Homesense Tribal Curated Corner - Designer Preview Framingham Massachusetts See blog post at windowdesignsetc.com

The first thing you see when entering the store is the “curated corner”.  They pull together a harmonious collection of the current tribal design trend.  Homesense employees tell me that the theme is going to change out about every six weeks. All the more reason to come back and shop often!

Tribal Accessories Homesense Designer Preview Framingham Massachusetts See blog post at windowdesignsetc.com

Indigenous design and craft from around the world are featured.  Upholstered furniture, pillows, baskets, side tables, water jugs and all sorts of accessories are available.

Accessory Heaven

Blue and White Accessories Homesense Designer Preview Framingham Massachusetts See blog post at windowdesignsetc.com

Not a fan of the current “curated corner”? No worries, there are so many accessories for every design style.  Oriental blue and white is forever classic.  There are accent pieces to liven up every stale corner of your home.

Design and coffee table books at Homesense Designer Preview Framingham Massachusetts See blog post at windowdesignsetc.com

There is an abundant selection of design and lifestyle books.  Great for reading and inspiration.  I see books as a flexible accessory to style a coffee table or bookcase.  Stack a few of these, add a vase on top and you have created a nice balance to a tall lamp on a console table.

Pillows Orange Green Homesense Designer Preview Framingham Massachusetts See blog post at windowdesignsetc.com

Pillows are an inexpensive way to add style and comfort to a sofa or chair.  Homesense does not disappoint with an extremely large selection of pillows.  It’s a pillow party! I love how they are artfully displayed by color.  Fabric, texture and pattern vary.

Blue Gray Pillows - Homesense Designer Preview Framingham Massachusetts See blog post at windowdesignsetc.com

The rainbow of pillows continues with the blue and gray section.  How about a few new pillows on your bed?

Large Selection of Furniture

One thing that stands out in my Homesense designer preview is the large selection of each merchandise category.   There isn’t just a couple of this and a few of that.  There is A LOT of everything! Available for you to take home immediately.  No ordering and waiting weeks.

Leather Sofas - Homesense Designer Preview Framingham Massachusetts See blog post at windowdesignsetc.com

The seating section was enormous for a home decor store.  There were love seats, sofas, sectionals, and sleepers from mid-century modern to Hollywood glam.  Notice the lighting section continues over the furniture area.  Yes, it’s that large.

Side Tables - Homesense Designer Preview Framingham Massachusetts See blog post at windowdesignsetc.com

Side tables, nightstands and cocktail tables are neatly nestled into these cubbies on one wall.  Again they offer a wide variety of styles, finishes, and sizes.

Floor and Wall Decor

Rugs - Homesense Designer Preview Framingham Massachusetts See blog post at windowdesignsetc.com

Rugs, rugs and more rugs in every size, style and weave.  This is just a small sampling of the accent rugs.  As you can see behind, there are several racks where large rugs hang vertically on wings. The holidays are coming, now there is no excuse to not have a rug under the dining room table, living room, hallway and guest bedroom for that matter.

Art and artwork at Homesense Designer Preview Framingham Massachusetts See blog post at windowdesignsetc.com

The wall art selection is quite large.  Style and size vary. In typical Homesense style, there were several massively large pieces to fill your big old empty walls.

They even have a beautiful array of smaller unframed prints. Pick up one of their picture frames and a few prints and you have art accents for the different seasons.

Floor Mirrors - Homesense Designer Preview Framingham Massachusetts See blog post at windowdesignsetc.com

Here is my Alice in Wonderland selfie.  These mirrors are larger than life. I’m in love with them! Do you have a room that always seems dark? Prop one of these mirrors opposite the windows to reflect more light into the room. Is your living room long and narrow? Add one of these mirrors on the narrow side of the room and it will appear wider.

Cook and Dine

Like its little sister Home Goods, Homesense has a substantial area dedicated to the kitchen, tabletop and food.

Kitchen and Cookware -Homesense Designer Preview Framingham Massachusetts See blog post at windowdesignsetc.com

Pots, pans and specialty cookware are offered from quality name brands.  If you look closely toward the top left of the photo, you’ll see an oversized whisk.  It’s about 24″ long.  Just what you need, right?

Italian Marketplace - Homesense Designer Preview Framingham Massachusetts See blog post at windowdesignsetc.com

The curated Italian Market has a tempting assortment of food from Italy and the cookware to go with it.

Tableware Dinnerware - Homesense Designer Preview Framingham Massachusetts See blog post at windowdesignsetc.com

Several dinnerware patterns are presented on heavy duty wire racks.  Buy a service for 18 or pick up a few patterned plates to use as an accent.  Take note of the stand to the far left.  It holds a clip board with Homesense How To tip sheets on The Right Way To Set The Table. Tear one off and take it home with your new dishes. You’ll know how to set the table for everyday, casual and formal dinners.

Homesense How To sheets are available throughout the store.  There are tips on creating a gallery wall, arranging a living room, selecting the right size rug and several more.  An absolutely genius idea, Homesense!  Helpful to the consumer while making selections in the store and furthering satisfaction while at home. I wrote a similar tip post on arranging a family room.

General Store and Celebrate

Two sections not to be missed is the General Store and Celebrate/Party.  I was too busy trying to take it all in, I didn’t get great photos.

General Store is just what the name implies.  There are so many small items for the home that you never knew you needed.  Tape measures, desk accessories, trash cans, trinket boxes, extension cords, knobs, hangers, signs and so much more.  Of course, they had large items too, like a free standing bath tub….seriously.

The Celebrate section is party and gifting central.  All occasions have their own well-curated space.  There are collections for wedding, baby, anniversary, birthday, children, gifts for him and gifts for her.  To wrap them all up, there is beautiful wrapping paper, boxes, bows, cards and everything you would ever need to make a special presentation.

Homesense Designer Preview Wrapup

Branding Tagline - Homesense Designer Preview Framingham Massachusetts See blog post at windowdesignsetc.com

The grand opening of the first Homesense store in the United States is Thursday, August 17.

Homesense in Framingham, Massachusetts is located between Route 9 and Route 30. It’s the old Shoppers World location.

How is Homesense different?  It’s like you gave Home Goods massive amounts of Miracle Grow.

How do you get those sofas, sectionals and enormous mirrors home?  Delivery is available for large items.  Wow!

The pricing follows the TJX model of up to 60% off manufacturers suggested retail. In other words, Homesense is very reasonable.

Homesense is already in Canada and England. My international designer friends have been raving about it for years.

Three more Homesense stores are scheduled to open this year. Next up are two in New Jersey.  The Westwood, Massachusetts locations is scheduled for opening November 9. I had a lovely conversation with the Westwood manager, Michelle.  She assures me that the Westwood location will be just as fabulous.

Pricing is really good, are things last seasons leftovers? Definitely not! I spotted many things that are right “on trend” with the design markets for this year.  I already have another blog post begun on Homesense Trend Spotting.

For everything Homsense, visit their site.

This is a long and detailed post.  I feel the need to point out that I, in no way, am an affiliate of Homesense or TJX companies.  I wrote this out of my enthusiasm for an inspiring home decor business. My clients and readers are who I serve.  They need to know how great of a place this is.

A comfortable, beautiful and secure home is a key component of a simply luxurious life. Choosing the Simply Luxurious Life by Shannon Ables. More on the blog - Window Designs Etc. by Marie Mouradian

Quote from The Simply Luxurious Life. Background fabric is Cuthbertson – Radish from Fabricut

In my search for design and lifestyle podcasts, I discovered The Simple Sophisticate in iTunes.

I like to listen to something uplifting and inspiring while driving or on my daily walks.  The Simple Sophisticate weekly podcast faithfully shows up in the downloads on my iPhone early Monday mornings. It’s presented by Shannon Ables who is a self professed Francophile and English teacher in Oregon. She offers 20-30 minutes of insights of “pairing intelligent living with signature style”.

She shares my philosophy of enhancing your life with the simple things to create a fulfilling life.  Her blog, The Simply Luxurious Life, features “refined living on an everyday income”.

First the blog then a podcast could only mean a book would be next.  Her new book arrived early December.  Shannon’s book was included in the recent sneak peak of my inner sanctuary. I bought mine on Amazon.

Choosing The Simply Luxurious Life is a delightful mix of advice for your signature style, creating a sanctuary, radiating beauty, maintaining healthy relationships, entertaining stylishly, traveling the world and elevating the simple pleasures in life to an art form. Shannon Ables teaches how to live simple luxuriously!

"Living in an environment that comforts, soothes and nourishes us is critical to a balanced and energized life " - Shannon Ables On The Bookshelf of Window Designs Etc. by Marie Mouradian

Background fabric is Amorial – Hemp from Fabricut

Praises to Shannon Ables for stylish writing on a subject I am always trying to encourage my clients to embrace.  It’s not about entertaining in your home for the 3 big holidays.  It’s about creating a home where you and your family can thrive.

The two quotes above bring all of her sophisticated advice back to the home environment.  Elevating our everyday lives begins in our personal sanctuary called home.

How do you live a fulfilling life?

For me, it’s all about the balance of life and work, which if you know me, you’ve heard me say “I don’t work, I play”.  I’ve been blessed to convert my passion, which I found at a very young age, into a business that I love. Fortunately, my studio is in my home so I get to enjoy all of the luxuries of a beautiful home while I work on creating beautiful homes for my clients.  How simply luxurious is that?

What simple luxuries do you treat yourself to?

My favorite luxuries are morning coffee in my reading chair, a bubbly tub, fresh flowers on the kitchen table, blending a fruit and vegetable smoothie, burning a scented candle, making a new recipe for dinner and snuggling in my favorite blanket while watching tv.

A trip into the Boston Design Center last week reaffirmed my love of the combination of pink and orange.

Boston Design Center - Marie Mouradian www.WindowDesignsEtc.com

Scanning the newest fabric collections in my favorite showrooms, I found lots of samples to share.

This is an interesting color trend.  Each color brings differing emotions.

Perhaps we are in a state of flux and can’t decide how we feel?

Pink is my signature color.  I wrote about a favorite flower – the peony, a few months back.  What do you know, one of the fabrics was pink and orange. Love it!

Where will you add orange and pink in your home?

Marimekko

Large scale bold patterns and colorful designs are the trend for all soft home furnishings this season.  Marimekko, the Finnish design house, has been known for this style since 1951.

The popular design leader fell out of style in the 1980’s and literally disappeared from the retail market in the United States. In the past few years Marimekko retail stores have been popping up in the swankiest design shopping meccas.

I traveled to the original flagship store in Helsinki, Finland last Spring.

What great timing!

How cute are the extra large bean bag chairs? They were a comfy place for the husbands to relax and people watch while my bestie and I did some drooling, I mean shopping.

Walls of floor to ceiling fabrics even made a fabric room. Now if that’s not a designer’s dream!

Once I stopped squealing with pure “fabriholic” joy, I found my all time favorite pattern.  Now THAT is a large scale pattern.  What you can see is only about half of the repeat.

I’m saving the full pattern to show you in another post about the fabric details.

Tuukka Rask and Marimekko

All of this talk about fabric, are you wondering what this has to do with a hockey player?

A short time before I was visiting Finland, Tuukka Rask’s homeland, he attended the opening of Marimekko on Newbury Street in Boston.

With girlfriend Jasmiina Nikkila by his side he is a Finnish guest at the opening.  You can see a photo here.

It is hard to recognize him behind that intimidating helmet he wears while protecting the net but he’s pretty cute all cleaned up.

Tuukka is one busy guy these days between the Bruins playoffs and his week old daughter.  Hopefully he has time to get down to the Marimekko store to pick up a first Mother’s Day gift for Jasmiina!

Marimekko has clothing and accessories too.  Anything from this creative display would satisfy a Marimekko fan.

Go Bruins!

I was off on another exotic trip last week.  55 of us from the Wachusett Area Chamber of Commerce, where I am a board member, traveled to China for a luscious taste of the Chinese culture.  It is a beautiful country, what I saw of it at least.

One of the best surprises for this cold, winter-worn soul was it was already springtime there!  Temperatures were in the low 70’s most of the time. during Springtime in China

The beautiful scenery and pleasant weather sparked an interest in how to make this feeling last.

Interior Design Inspiration At The Beach

I am passionate about window treatments, as if you didn’t already know that.  I love this business so much, even after 30 years, that I manage to find inspiration for my unique designs in the most unusual places.

Most of the time the weekend does not mean I leave my projects behind.  My mind is constantly going through the Rolodex of current, perspective and past custom window treatment projects.

Designing window treatments brings me lots of JOY

We’ve escaped to Cape Cod for one last weekend before our daughter heads back to college.  As many of you know it has been a very eventful summer for our family.  Our son moved into his first house and our daughter had major surgery.  She is feeling far better than any of us imagined.  Check out Amy’s Back.

Sitting at the beach is total relaxation for me.  My mind is free to wander.  It is in this nothingness that everything I look at inspires a design for a window treatment. There is endless interior design inspiration at the beach, especially on Cape Cod. Designing is more like child’s-play than work.

3 Favorite Finds For Spring

Like most people, I spend a lot of time on the computer.  As a designer, I am always searching and researching new ideas and products to bring into my clients’ homes.

These are just a few that have caught my eye and started my creative juices flowing.  Please visit their websites/blogs and let them know I sent you.

Creative Artwork

3 Favorite Finds for Spring on Windowdesignsetc.com Kati Curtis John Derian http://www.houseofturquoise.com/2012/03/nirmada-interior-architectural-design.html

Small pieces of artwork make a huge inspiring statement in this Back Bay Condo designed by Kati Curtis

House of Turquoise featured this entire Back Bay condo on her blog from Design Life by New York interior designer Kati Curtis.  I love how she has filled what little wall space there is with unique art media.  John Derian is the artist behind, literally, this art.  They are antique prints decoupaged under glass. There are 27 pieces artfully arranged.  I wonder if the 27 pieces were a conscious decision to be congruent with the teachings of  Feng Shui.  Following Kati’s designs, I am sure the wall was well planned out and didn’t happen haphazardly. It’s hard to tell what the treatment is on the window; a white pleated shade perhaps.  I’ll have to ask Kati.

Be Your Own Decorator by Susanna Salk

3 Favorite Finds for Spring Susanna Salk book on Windowdesignsetc.com

Susanna Salk’s new book-Be Your Own Decorator

Tobi Fairley introduced me to this book on her blog a few weeks ago.  I believe you can never have too many books or too much inspiration and this gives me both.  Compiled by Massachusetts’ own Susanna Salk, of NBC’s Today show Design Ideas, 75 of the world’s top designers and taste-makers share their favorite rooms and design advice.  Salk invites and encourages readers to commit “design plagiarism” by copying designer’s styles and ideas for your own home.

Tobi, is included in the book where she describes a foyer “An entry is like a great party invitation: it sets the tone for what’s to come.”~Tobi Fairley.  Tobi is one designer who LOVES window treatments and uses them boldly in her projects.

Runway Fashions For Your Home

3 Favorite Finds for Spring on Windowdesignsetc.com Fashion and Decor http://www.colorchats.com/2012/03/bring-the-spring-2012-runways-into-your-home/

Clothing designer Jonathan Saunders meets House Beautiful     Benjamin Moore’s blog, Color Chats!, featured guest writer Gretchen Aubuchon this week.  Aubuchon, also from Massachusetts, is an expert at bringing fashion trends from the runway straight into your home decor.  She encourages you to take colors from the season’s stylish fashions and paint your walls. Benjamin Moore paint, which I use for all of my color consulting,  selected from New England’s own Aubuchon Hardware would probably make Gretchen happy.

I love how this room has several solid colors that decorate the space playfully.  The patterned drapery panels work to pull all the colors together.

Window Shopping on Cape Cod

What does one do when at the beach and it is raining?……Go shopping of course!  Betsy Young, the owner of the Soho Arts Co., has a keen eye on taste and all things unique.  Here are a few things on my wish list.

A full array of colorful scarfs creatively displayed at Soho Arts Co. Draped over a pine table or around the waist of a plain dress, these are sure to add a punch of color and style. My decorator’s eye sees these made into simple café curtains in a cottage bedroom. They would give just enough privacy and you could watch them blow in the breeze.

Not so plain tee

This classic white V neck tee is not so plain when dressed up with this soft scarf.

Soho Arts Co.

One of my favorite stores on Main Street, Hyannis, MA. Their tag line is “Artful Living and Giving”

Stop in on your next visit to Cape Cod.  It is well worth the trip!
